Fuck having to backtrack through levels to use specific boss abilities on hidden spots to get upgrades. That shit sucked in the original game and thank god they ditched it for Mega Man 2.
I remember long after I beat MMX reading about the tons of upgrades that were in the game that I missed because I wasn't pouring over levels I had already beaten. I was missing out on most of the cool new stuff in the game just because I wasn't willfully jumping down every death pit? Fuck that.
MM2 had the perfect difficulty. Some might call it too easy, but the fun was in picking it up to play over and over trying out new stuff knowing that it wouldn't be frustratingly hard.
I think the graphics and music were the best parts of the X series, and starting it off with a little tutorial story was kind of cool. The worst part was definitely the Sigma fights. Slowly plinking off his lifebar as you wall jumped was pure tedium.
To me, 2 had a lot of "lasts" in series:
-It was the last game before that FUCKING charge up shot was introduced. Having to constantly hold the B button down during a tough platformer was bad enough, but listening to the wwwwrrrrrEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound effect all game was worse.
-It was the last game to not be balanced around energy tanks. The difficulty in 2 could be adjusted by going out of your way to collect all the energy tanks, but you could easily beat any boss on just one lifebar. Going back to grind max energy tanks before attempting certain bosses in later games became nearly mandatory.
-It was the last game where the boss weaknesses even tried to make sense. Fire! Water! Use the upward tornadoes on the boss who jumps up high! Use the time stop on the guy who moves quick! Use metal blade if you want to do easy mode!
-It was the last game where boss weaknesses weren't near mandatory. Bosses in every later game would require slow plinking if you ever used the default cannon (fuck the charge up shot). Wouldn't be so bad if there was any kind of logic to weaknesses and you could guess them.
Although 2 did introduce the annoying trend of "the final boss' ultimate form can only be hurt by the most useless weapon" :( |
