So, my main TV watching device is a Win 7 media PC with a blu ray player. It came with PowerDVD 9, which was always flaky - sometimes I have to eject and re-insert the disc a few times in order to get it to play (like it's some sort of old NES). And it seems like it will totally refuse to play with no warnings if there happens to be some sort of other media player running at the same time - including the Amazon instant open in a browser, or Media Center.
However now it seems to be totally unable to play some of the newer discs out there. Doing some googling it appears that newer discs might have some sort of newer certs, that the old players just don't even fucking have.
Of course, PowerDVD, being the awesome OEM software that is, does not update their old players with the new certs. If I want the new certs, I need to upgrade to version 14. For $80. I CAN BUY A PHYSICAL BLU RAY PLAYER FOR CHEAPER THAN THAT.
So, Caltrops - what is the best solution for playing blu ray on a PC? Bonus points if it integrates well with Win Media Center, but I am considering switching to XBMC.
Or, should I just give up on blu ray nonsense. The unskippable previews are almost a dealbreaker by themselves. |
