Their chief complaint seems to be that the games withhold speed as a reward for playing well, but they have no interest in learning how to play well. Like, according to the video, they would rather just plow into enemies and take the hit than press down on the D-pad to make Sonic roll into a spiny cannonball, turning his hitbox into a hurtbox and his entire body into a lethal projectile (this is where the "hedgehog" part of his name comes from). What can you say to that? It's a skill-based arcade-style action game, not an exercycle or the fucking Torah; investing time and energy into it isn't going to make them better human beings, it's just a reasonably pleasant way to kill a couple of hours.
Let me see if I can sum up the appeal of Sonic. Most games get less fun if you try to speed run them. The Sonic games actually get much, much MORE fun. (The good Sonic games do, anyway - God knows there are few enough of those.) They're games where the timer counts up instead of down; they don't punish you for failure like Ghosts 'n Goblins, they reward you for success like OutRun. They're simultaneously easy enough that a very small child could see the end and hard enough to frustrate a grown man into 75,000 views on Youtube. The first and especially the second Sonic perfectly encapsulate the Sega design philosophy of games that are meant to be enjoyed rather than conquered or experienced, and they do it in a way that's friendly and accessible to the sort of people who might otherwise never set foot in an arcade. They are baby's first Sega game, they are your gateway to the FANTASY ZONE. Every Genesis should come with one.
[The best part of the video: when they calculate they only had 250ms to react to a hazard when moving at full blast, by literally pressing any button on the controller (they all do the same thing) or down on the D-pad (maintains momentum, but requires correctly identifying the threat as an enemy rather than a jump). This site lets you measure your own reaction time. Could YOU handle the speed?] |
