The reason everything in the environment makes noise is so you can stay oriented in the slightly complex, non-linear levels - if you know what room the clown machine is in, you always know when you're near that room. The reason why all the enemies constantly broadcast their position with taunts and whale songs is because they don't just sit in closets waiting for you to trip their triggers (well, some of them don't), they actually wander around the levels trying to look busy. There is so much more going on in that game than the extended tram ride that was Half-Life 2. |
