Your comparison between eating raw hamburger and the AIDS thing is fucking crazy.No, it isn't, it's exactly on point, and it shows again that you do not get it. If you leave raw hamburger out on a counter, if it sits long enough it will spoil or otherwise become contaminated. Because it is at room temperature it encourages the multiplication of bacteria. But unless and until the meat has in some fashion become contaminated it cannot be dangerous. You can't get food poisoning from food that lacks the food poisoning bacteria. You can't catch AIDS from someone who doesn't have it. It's the same issue. If it's too cold for the bacteria to survive - or too hot - it's either not there or it's been killed because conditions for its survival were inadequate. Dead bacteria do not spread disease. I think the real issue is people who don't process meat cold. For example, when I want some hamburger and it's frozen, I put the frozen hamburger in the refrigerator for 24 hours. I suspect the vast majority of people who get sick because they or someone else thawed out hamburger by leaving it in the sink to thaw or otherwise did so at room temperature. Now that, is rank insanity, for the reasons I stated in the preceding paragraph. When I eat raw hamburger, it's straight from the refrigerator at 34 F. When I cook it, it's going on a 200 F grill after coming out of the fridge cold at 34. It's never at room temperature more than a minute if cooked and it never touches another surface except my hands if being eaten raw. And there's one strict rule I comply with: I always wash my hands before I eat. |
