On checkpointing and controllers by Lurker 410942 06/05/2014, 7:23pm PDT
I think one of the simpler things we've been missing about checkpointing is how easy it is to forget about F5 quicksaving when you're holding a controller. I tried to get back into Shadow Warrior, killed a whole bunch of guys, felt great, got 4.5 stars, and then I popped a red barrel and all the cars around me exploded, sending me back to before the fight. I just came off of an Age of Wonders and emulation binge, so it's not like I wasn't used to the idea of quicksaving, I just plain forgot about it when I had the controller in my hands and was sitting back in my chair.

So do you think the recent rise in controller use has contributed to the growth of checkpoint exclusive games? I'm not downplaying the importance of regenerating health and making nice, controllable setpiece battles, but do you think just having your hands away from the keyboard changes your game design priorities?

I guess that doesn't explain Shadowrun, though.

You can map quicksave to a button, it's not like controllers these days have any by shortage of them. 06/06/2014, 8:27am PDT NEW
