I'll understand if you don't want to argue RPGs with a shutin, but I have to try by Jerry Whorebach 04/25/2014, 4:46pm PDT

Hiring existing characters harms the gameplay in favor of story. You lose the ability to custom build a team to take on the challenges that await. What's more, you put the player in a screwy position with regards to balance.

How is it easier to balance a practically infinite number of potential characters than a limited pool of premade ones? This is the sort of thing a person who plays One Must Fall 2097 would say. In the case of Blackguards, full party creation just sounds like a patch for the inability to design attractive characters - throw up your hands and let the player do it himself. Is your customer looking for a game, or a game creation kit?

Give all info. The Dark Spire is an irritating game because the shop at the start sells a variety of weapons, but the relatively cheap Estoc is flat out superior to the super expensive Katana. The difficulty is geared high in that game as it is, why fuck the player on top of it?

If the player can tell one weapon is flat out better than another just by looking at the stats, why would you even include the shitty weapon in the first place? The only reason I can come up with is because figuring out which weapon is which is supposed to be some kind of puzzle, in which case you'd want to hide the stats anyway so as not to "spoil" it.

And stop a moment and ask yourself, "If I asked a player if he'd rather play the character who's badass, or the character who sucks, which would 99% choose on their first go?"

I think most people would choose the character who they think would give them access to the most unique content; that is, the character who's most optimized for extracting fun from the game. Like how every Nameless One seems to end up maximizing the memory-unlocking Wisdom and dialogue-influencing Intelligence at the expense of boring combat skills like More Hitpoints, at least on their first playthrough.
