| It would be really easy to take a cheap shot at you for actually not hating Doom 3. Some people would even say that this thread was DOOMED from the start!
In the true spirit of Caltrops caring, though, I'll confess something. I actually played through Doom 3 one Christmas vacation. I had just finished building a new computer for one of my brothers and I wanted to test it out. We ended up playing through the whole damn game in just a few days. I remember at the time the concept of playing on an LCD widescreen monitor seemed pretty cool. I remember feeling kind of sad that Doom 3 wasn't really as good as the first two. But that's the way the cookie crumbles. When did DOOM becomes so goddamn complicated anyway? I don't remember reading anything or viewing any lines of dialogue in the first two. In Doom 3 there were all these audio-logs and things to read. But after like 15 minutes it all gets pretty tedious. Are there going to be bunch of demons running around in a game called Doom? GEE I WONDER. Mysterious sounds; could it be a monster? NO THAT'S JUST ABSURD; HOW IRRATIONAL There've been a lot of bad shooters made, some a lot worse than Doom 3. I played Brute Force for an hour or two recently. God was that awful. In Doom 3, they at least put some effort into level design and it (usually) doesn't all feel the same. Anyway, while I don't really know if Doom 3 deserves the bad rep it has, it definitely doesn't really deserve to be played when there are games like HL2 out there from that time period. At least that's my take on it |
