Don't you want to know why fighting imps in the dark is like fighting destroyers by in a submarine? 04/16/2014, 12:47pm PDT Your flashlight is your periscope; you use it when entering an engagement to create a mental map of the situation on the surface. But you can't fight with your periscope up, which is why it's so fortunate that your enemy's primary method of attack - fireballs/depth charges - are both slow moving enough to evade, and bright/loud enough to keep you abreast of his position. Your shotgun is not only your torpedo tube but also your active sonar, each muzzle flash/sonar ping gifting you with a momentary snapshot of the combat zone. Except in this new high-performance console version, your muzzle flash no longer creates any illumination, which isn't EVEN a problem because you can just leave your flashlight on while you're fighting anyway. So good work, id, on managing to stamp out everything that made Doom 3's combat even slightly unique. Now it really is just Quake II with narrower corridors and fewer enemies :( (Also the new button layout works fine as long as you don't like to do a lot of running or switching weapons.)
