(Sung to the tune of "Winston Tastes Good")

Winston tastes bad
Like the one I just had
No filter
No flavor
They taste like toilet paper!

I probably first heard this 45 years ago. This was far enough back that cigarettes could legally be advertised on television and radio.

Is this the commercial you're talking about? Winstons in fact taste wonderful. I thought maybe you might be referring to an earlier model that didn't have a filter. But the commercial refers to how "the filter lets the flavor through", so it clearly had a filter even back then. I don't see how you can claim otherwise. Have you ever had a Winston cigarette? Until you do, I won't accept any claim they taste bad.

Uh, dude, 45 years ago was 1970 and I was 10 years old. I am a lifelong non-smoker (and teetotaler) despite the fact both my parents smoked and my sister smoked and eventually quit. In fact, when I lived in California I used to buy her cigarettes in bulk from Smart & Final Iris because I had a sales tax permit and could purchase them without paying sales tax. This was not to get out of paying sales tax, but the exact opposite. When I got the quarterly bill I'd pay the sales tax on all the cigarettes my mother had given me the money - including tax - for. This was not to get away with holding onto the money, but to ensure I always reported some sales and thus they would never cancel my sales tax permit for non-use. Maybe I'm only paying $5 or $10 every three months, that's still non-zero and ensures my account would stay open even if I didn't use it otherwise.

My sales tax permit was issued for "Computer Supplies" but under the rules of the California Franchise Tax Board once you have a permit you can purchase anything from another merchant who does resale, without paying sales tax.

Basically I think my mother - who lived to be over 70 by the way and died shortly before the turn of the millenium - was a long-time consumer of the four basic food groups: cigarettes. coffee, salt and cabbage soup. My mother made a mean cabbage soup, it was delicious. Really delicious.
