KVMs aren't os specific and usually don't even require drivers, you'd just set the monitor to "generic vga" and move on.
That's been my experience, the problem is that at Generic VGA, I'm limited to 1024x768. But as you go on to describe, there's a better way.
if this is about like having these things in a datacenter and accessing them via kvm through emergencies, there's no need for hdmi and it's probably a bad idea, always use the oldest dumbest most reliable tech, even if that's a serial squid for linux. if it's about being able to control two machines from one desktop you're better off using rdp or vnc and skipping the hardware solution.
Well, I had successfully made the switch to a Linux desktop. I was feeling good about myself. I was even giving a childlike wonder of a hearty chuckle to xkcd strips. Just kidding -- I really enjoyed the new system.
But where I got stuck was with graphics editing. There is a feature Photoshop has that GIMP doesn't (being able to specify the percentage of diffusion when using indexed color on a graphic - which matters to me because I am using CGA graphics for the game I am making). And you guys were right. Gimp has come a looooooooong way.
So I wanted to just flip back to Windows for Photoshop. I see that I can now just log into the box with RDP and do it that way. I think that will work.
Although one aggravating thing is that the Mint machine will lose wireless network connectivity all the time. I have to then disable the USB adapter, wait a little bit, turn it back on, wait a little bit and then tell it to connect to the house's WiFi. Not sure where the problem lies. The Windows machine right physically next to it does not have that problem and it is using the same wireless adapter, a D-link thing.
Thanks again.
