Let's face it: if your aim is to create great gameplay, the one-eye-through-a-cardboard-tube perspective on a fully-3D environment is a pretty major handicap. More or less the only reason to go with it is if you're trying to help the player live out a real fantasy in a virtual world, to "walk a mile in another man's shoes" (or more likely, judging by the relative popularity of adult fantasies these days, combat boots). There are plenty of games that prize gameplay over story and realism; the thing is, they're mostly not first-person shooters, and they're definitely not the small handful of massively successful first-person shooters this guy seems to have played. |
