I have never posted about them because I hate them.
I hate mobile games because I spent my whole life buying bigger and bigger monitors for faster and faster PCs so I could play some bullshit on a fucking 3" blackberry screen? No. iPhone screen was better but still enh Super Monkey Ball enh Final Fantasy Tactics WOTL with its shitty dialogue retranslation enh. ENH.
I hate board games because you can only play so many rounds of fuckin Sorry before you decide those are for dumb children and you graduate to like Battletech or GURPS.
However, and let me warn you way early that I am about to cost you like 1000 hours of your life,
as a result of my prejudice I missed a lot, it turns out there's some good board games made in some place called Europe or alternately the State of Minnesota where they make Arkham Horror. That shit is brilliant and this designer guy Vlaada Chvatil who designs the systems but doesn't work on the games is brilliant and like how did that happen he never even coded for id. There's some decent mobile games like Stair Dismount even though I played stuff like that as a last resort.
Ok so it turns out Board Games on Mobile are fucking genius. They take a good complex board game which tends to have simple patterns that interact with each other in interesting ways, then it's not too hard to write an AI to play it at an evil degree of difficulty. The art is basically tiny animations around the existing game art. This must be the easiest prototyping process of all time. The game is turn based so you can just play a couple turns at a time, in my case on the subway, in boring meetings, etc.. There's no fucking 10 minutes a day energy mechanic or w/e Brian Reynolds problem is.
Lords of Waterdeep and Warhammer Quest fucking rule and I can unreservedly recommend both of them whatever the price, and Playdek who made LoW also has other games that rule, like Agricola and (I'm told) Ascension, though I haven't played it yet because the first two basically take up all my time. Warhammer Quest kept fucking with me on IOS 7 so I waited until they patched it but they did and now it's fucking great.
Jonesy should look at Sorcery 2 which is literally Steve Jackson Presents: Choose Your Own Adventure: The Game |
