You're giving me more ammunition here. The gameplay is excellent for the first playthrough, after that it's checkers, you've learned the rules and it's you vs the RNG.
Starfleet Command is less fun than FTL after a while, but for sure I don't need to be Kirk to win either. You like the action, fine, but it's a death star trench run struggle writ large.
I'll take your definitive statement about retro graphics, but I'm not sold on the idea that restriction to yesteryear's limits necessarily leads to quality games. An interest in focusing on what's worked before does seem key, but my seeing the minimalist cousin of the Lucasarts interface is a byproduct of the process of focusing on something other than photorealism. Why does the benchmark retro indie devs choose as a stopping point bear examination for anyone concerned with the gameplay qualities of the end product and not with a nostalgia-inducing veneer? Smartphones? I guess they're a platform with relevant hardware limitations here, you can even get a bluetooth keyboard. |

I don't think FTL's gfx count as "retro." Just "shitty." NT by Mischief Maker 01/19/2014, 10:31pm PST
It's really tempting to describe anything that isn't bleeding edge as retro. by Worm 01/20/2014, 10:00pm PST

FTL is only retro when viewed through rose-tinted nostalgia goggles by stupid newbie 01/24/2014, 9:14am PST
