Went on a 2 hour bender with Rocksmith by fabio 01/18/2014, 10:14pm PST
Caveat: I've had maybe an hour of guitar practice over the past 8 years and have no illusions that I'll ever be that good.

The input technology works shockingly well considering it's just based on a normal guitar output, but using the guitar's out as your in-game sound also introduces a fucking irritating amount of lag. In the post-CRT era, you can't get away with this. My other major issue is that my good guitar's output level is too low to be used by the game, even with the humbucker selected (double coil, hotter output than single coil pickups). I snapped my high E string using the in-game tuner (running through the in-game tuner is required before play) because it wasn't being picked up and the tuner just kept goading "higher!". I should have realized this sooner, but I'd thought the guitar had just gone radically out of tune during its long spell on the rack. The rock band pro guitar worked fine the first time, though.

I never really had a problem with that. Though I'm playing the PC version on a laptop so maybe it's a TV/monitor thing?

I remember why I gave up trying to pick up guitar years ago. I can't for the life of me spread my fingers out when they're curved into the playing position. You expect me to spread 4 fingers across 4 frets? It's a strain to play practically across 3!

The game itself is interesting in that it automatically adjusts what notes you're playing on the fly based on how well you're doing. I generally liked it, but it's very frustrating when you almost have something and they dumb it back down for you.

I had the opposite problem! Okay I'm just barely getting shifting across 2 frets on one string...my very first five note streak...what?! 7 fret shifts across 2 strings? What the fuck? No! Go back until I have the basic shit down pat! Should have just thrown in standard difficulty mode settings.

When you think of all the games to unnecessarily shoehorn in bullet time, here's one game that desperately needs it but doesn't include it. I liked how the pre-practice exercise stopped the song until you hit the right note. That should be the entire practice mode! That should be the easy difficulty mode you forgot to put in!

I guess music instructors have been playing for so long that they forgot what it's like to not know anything. Every one I've met has a huge teaching gap between "playing your first note" and "intermediate". In Rocksmith, they expect you to immediately take the giant leap between "two frets, one string" and "half the length of the neck across multiple strings". Faster! No more pausing! What the hell do you mean you can't do hammer-ons yet? You've been holding this instrument half an hour already!

It's decent, but it would easily be so much better with manual difficulty settings and slow motion.
