I bought a Greendot Mastercard at Dollar Tree, which will allow you to purchase prepaid reloadable debit Master and Visa cards for the low-low price of $1 for any load up to $75. If you go to places like Target or Family Dollar it costs at least $4.95 to load money on a prepaid gift or debit card. The number for my Mastercard is 5264 7400 1633 3107, it expires 11/15, the name on the card is Paul Robinson, and the CVV number is 469.
The reason it won't work is because it has a negative balance of $4. It had about a buck left on it but the monthly service charge of $5.95 was applied.
What's interesting is that when I bought it, the expiration was 6/17, the preprinted name was Valued Customer, and the CVV number was 636. Oh, and I wasn't sure but I looked, while everything was printed rather than embossed, it does have a mag strip so the cashier can load the amount on it.
I also had a Visa Debit card, 4250 3130 0905 9300 and the original card also expired 06/17 and had the CVV number 291, with the name Valued Customer. I don't know where the card with my name embossed on it went, I didn't really care since by the time I finished I only had 6c available on it.
I only loaded $10 on either to get my feet wet with using a, in effect, temporary card. They actually mail you a 'real' debit card with your number and name embossed on it and while it has the same number, the CVV number on the back and expiration date changes between the card they sell you in the store, which basically you can only use on line, and the one they send you, which has a mag strip and you can use it anywhere. I realize since they don't know how long the card is going to sit in the store, which is why the store card has a much longer expiration vs. the one they send you, so they can recycle the number sooner.
I just basically got sick and tired of companies that either chronically try to upsell you on additional products and services, you buy the item at the price they quote, and they want to sell you something with a monthly service charge or they want to sell you other things. This is especially common when you call on the phone and buy something for maybe $10-19.95 or so plus another $5-8 for shipping, which I don't have a problem with. It's the goddam offer to subscribe to a $19.95 monthly service, or another product or service added on that I'm not interested in. And it's so easy to mistakenly order something else or not mean to start some monthly subscription after the first month is "free" and you have to fight to stop it. It also protects me against disreputable sellers, if they can't accept a debit card that has the full amount of what they claim is the price, but the card won't work, that's a good sign they want to subscription bill additional fees or lard on more charges later.
For one buck to get rid of that upsell problem, I'll pay that fee.
Mainly it was to pay for domain name registration, some companies are offering loss leader domain name registrations for 50c or 99c for the first year, or sometimes $1.99. Now I think some of them check by credit card number, so you would need to have new numbers for each account. Since you can have the domain name point to anywhere it doesn't matter that you order a registration with one company where your hosting is with someone else. So now you know why I bought more than one.
Now, I have credit cards and I have a debit card from Wells Fargo for my corporate checking account. But two things, by using a prepaid card, since the card issuer can't get a dime out of me - I paid the fee and the load for the card with cash so there is no way they can collect more money - it means they absolutely will not, under any circumstances, for any reason, allow me to run an overdraft or cause it to allow it to pay more than the amount loaded where they have to pay someone else. I can't spend anything above what I load on the card. (I don't consider a negative balance because of their fee to be an 'overdraft' because I'll never pay that fee, once the card goes over the first month it will have no money left and I'll toss the card. Or else save it for other uses. A used credit card makes an excellent device for spreading grout. Hard, plastic, curved edge and it doesn't matter if you get stuff on it.)
By the way, the debit card numbers I gave out are real, were actual working Mastercard and Visa card numbers, and if you're stupid enough to put money into either card via a Green Dot money pak so it no longer had a negative balance it would actually work.
But if you want an actual working credit card number for testing you now have a Visa and Mastercard number you can use. And if you want to get a Visa or Mastercard with up to $75 loaded on it for only $1, you can go to Dollar Tree instead of any place else. Oh, and you can load more than $75, it's $1 for each $75, so it's still cheaper to use Dollar Tree for a prepaid Master Card or Visa up to a load of $300, which would only cost $4.
