how I fixed my disc read error forever at the cost of zero dollars by FABIO 04/05/2005, 11:47am PDT
1. Remove outer screws and case (being careful not to teat the case off so you don't damage the power strip running from the On button to the console.

2. Remove inner screws and cover surrounding disc drive.

3. Gently wipe your (clean) thumb a few times over the laser lense.


Put back all cover, and you're done. That's most likely the cure for the majority of disc read errors, and the BIG OPERATION that sony charges $200 for. I've gotten chronic disc read errors twice in two years and they both instantly went away right after I did this.
