Allowing external access to your db: a Bad Idea

You could also change the program here (pointy.php), authorize another site for remote access to MySQL, then just change the writer routine to write every record twice, once to the local database and a second write to a remote database.
That's even worse!
Okay, you've made the claim it's a a bad idea; proceed to defend your position.
Remote MySQL in Cpanel allows for remote authorization by domain name or IP address. Which is pretty fine grain authentication. So explain to me why this is wrong. I think it is a great idea for having, in effect, an automatic backup. So I'm curious why you think it's a bad idea. And why you think using a secondary database as a means of providing redundant data is a worse idea.
So let's hear why you think it's a bad idea and why the other is worse. Educate me.
