I am really amazed that they are remaking The Thing, Robocop and Total Recall and doing a laughable job EACH TIME. You're right, Gravity feels like what fabs was saying a while back about how there are no "regular" movies anymore. Sorry if I got the quote wrong. This isn't meant to be the first in some gaywad series or whatever. It took advantage of the medium. Sorta want to see it again before it leaves theaters.
I think the word I used was "entertainment movies" but whatever yeah. Out of control budgets increased the focus on the lowest common denominator (how did movies get to the point where Pluto Nash and Daredevil cost over 2 to 3 times as much as Raiders of the Lost Ark, even after adjusting for inflation?) and the expanding foreign market punched out the bottom of the barrel for it.
More along the lines of me being right, here's something else Gravity pulled off: not saturating everything with orange/blue. In a movie where half the shots feature a giant blue Earth background, can you imagine any other creative team (say what you want about Children of Men's script; the cinematography and editing were masterpieces) not digitally turning the actors into the annoying orange? How many current big budget movies avoid this crutch? The only other more reliable measure of sucktitude is the writers.*
* exceptions: the presence of Liev Shreiber or Craig Robinson (star of two different 2013 Rapture movies).
