Well, with the main exception that you've got people running around using language which implies taking a picture of someone without asking is the same as rape.
I lived in Salem for a few years and went to a few conventions (PAX, Magfest, Otakon) so I think I at least have some limited experience on this. Generally people are going to ask for permission to take a picture just because then they'll get a better picture and sometimes people won't bother since they don't want to pester you or don't care if the picture is shitty. I think that's about it! I'm sure assholes are doing upskirts everywhere still, but I think the whole specter of 'Nerd Culture Events are extremely hostile places where women go to be molested and screamed at' needs to be for once and all exorcised.
I think a lot of it is people projecting shit someone says on the internet as if they said it to their face and women not liking how 50+ strangers look at her when she's half naked. Everyone could probably do with being more excellent to one another, but the hyperbolic screeching with regards to 'cosplayer rights' has reached a fevered pitch that it really needs to back down from. It's almost ridiculous to wonder what would make them happy. Would all cosplayers need to have the ability to on the stop eject someone from the convention(as if these things don't have enough tinpot dictators)? Does some secret police need to be established to monitor all micro-aggressions against cosplayers? Maybe the best solution would be to only allow seasoned cosplayers, it's not as if the most catty and despicable shit is generally coming out of them.
To finish this up I'll present you a comic, by a person who never even wore her costume to a convention and then wrote a comic about the kind of response she got (in her head). This certainly doesn't prove the majority of these complaints are projection and I bet a cosplayer has really been called a fat ass at least once at every convention.
