Putting aside the fact that if he changes the name everyone except the most virulent racists will forget about it and stop caring within ten years, while keeping the name means this won't ever ever go away and I'll continue starting obnoxious threads on Caltrops: think of all the money Dan Snyder is throwing away.
You announce that the Redskins name is going away in 2016. Immediately you get a sales bump from collectors and racists.
You run out limited edition test jerseys in 2014 and 2015 and declare that the public is going to vote with their wallets to choose the new jersey design.
Local promotion and tie-ins for a contest to rename the team (you're not going to use it, of course; you're going to focus group the new name and logo to hell and back).
In 2015 you have a big farewell campaign. Ten different throwbacks, exclusive patches, final Redskins season merchandise -- just getting as depraved and shameless as you can in milking it.
Finally, you have the new mascot, logo, helmet, and jersey, which die-hard fans and youth of a certain demographic will immediately purchase to replace their old gear.
Billions of dollars. Billions. But he's too petulant and too short-sighted to just take the win that's offered him. |
