Well finally World of Warcraft developers have told their biggest lie. by Worm 08/24/2013, 9:05am PDT
On Polygon no less, the den of lies.

Blizzard made its first major push to appeal to casual fans with last year's release of expansion Mists of Pandaria, something that Chilton says has proven to be "very successful" for the company.

This is pretty ridiculous since every expansion has been appealing more and more to casual fans. Even TBC which is generally regarded as pretty fucking hard made it easier to level and gear up. From there expansions just made the only thing in the game (dungeons and raiding) easier and easier culminating with MoP where you literally can kill the final raid boss with no idea of what you're doing. Since players can now do the same content on lower difficulty, it's pretty ridiculous to fill raid slots or do anything meaningful. The changes are all for people who hate MMOs but insist on playing them, they've voted with their dollars to ruin a whole genre because they'd rather have an experience that isn't compelling rather then put in some effort. There was a slight back up in this philosophy with the the very first content patch of Cataclysm but I guess it didn't focus well.

"We would have been in bad shape had we not done that," he told us, acknowledging that many long-time players saw this move as a break from the MMO's roots which focused on instances and raids. With reference to the original World of Warcraft before the release of any expansions, Chilton said:

"People who played Vanilla always say 'if it had stayed the same, I would have the same fun now as I did then.' But that's not true. Audiences always evolve," he explained.

Working off the assumption that the first part is a lie, yeah they probably would not have reached 12 million subs without designing the game more and more for children. Though they've been doing nothing but losing subs since MoP came out, so I guess they're trying to say they would have lost even more without turning the game into a total piece of shit.

So that's it, MMOs are fucking shit. No one is going to admit or point out it's because Blizzard brought people into the audience who hate MMOs and hate their own fucking lives and that most other companies are too afraid to build up an audience slowly and instead want big Blizzard numbers to begin with. Shit excuses like this are going to pass for ages and everyone will wonder why an amazing game like Wildstar can't catch on with the hardcore audience.
