The old D&D brawler arcade games Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara as a PC game with online quickmatch co-op? Fuck yeah!

The reality

I would like to apologize to all my 90s friends and arcade strangers for being the guy who always picked the elf. What was fun for me turns out to be fucking awful when other people are playing elves and mages spamming game-pausing spells constantly. SOM is particularly bad with the mage character who is almost worthless hand to hand but gets a lot of screen-clearing spells so you get a bunch of people who burn through all that shit right away so they can die, continue, and do it again.

Not enough wasting everyone's time? Why not force everyone to wait so each new player can enter their name? Continue as a different character? Force everyone to wait as they enter a new name.

Force everyone to wait every shop screen for the one guy who keeps clicking on the shopkeeper's tits instead of the exit button.

Force everyone to wait because everyone stops to fight the gargoyles (who can only be hurt by spells) for 5 minutes without realizing that they're not doing any damage and that you can just keep going and run past them.

Since you're not feeding quarters anymore and get unlimited continues, there's no point in ever picking the cleric because there's no point in healing.

NO CONTROLLER SUPPORT!!! In a port of an arcade game. Keyboard only! Amazing.

Anyways, there are a couple neat options in the sequel SOM like the thief, some expanded block and dodge moves, and more ranged options for the traditionally boring fighter characters, but it's moot because everyone just picks the mage who's loaded with screen-effect spells that still damage bosses (even cloud kill?). The whole game is waiting for your entire party of mages to finish spamming all their ice storm and cloud kill spells. They might as well call it Final Fantasy 8.
