They're not anymore shit than AdviceAnimals (any post), pics (here's a picture of someone who found a McNugget that looks like sorta looks like godzilla) or gaming(hey guys, does anyone remember this scene from Ocarina of Time?). The reason that politics and atheism were removed were because they need to make it ad-friendly and mainstream it. Atheism and politics were at odds with that so they were removed from the defaults. It's inane shit (aww, gifs, etc) vs. dogmatic shit (atheism, politics). If anything, atheism was trying to clean up by by getting rid of facebook posts, memes, etc. Ultimately, both subreddits will benefit and maybe politics will become more than reposts of Glenn Greenwald and Europeans who never learned how to google asking "Is this really what the US is like?" since any subreddit that becomes a default becomes worse. I understand their decision but let's not pretend that it's anything other than what it is and that they want to make their site less 4chan and more Pinterest.
