Endless Space just got a $10 expansion pack which adds a new faction, cleans up the older ones, adds some new techs and battle options.
After a few hours with it, I'd say the new faction is interesting without making the game more fun. It is a faction that can't use money, so everything's free to maintain, but you get no bonuses for keeping people in the money and you can't buy stuff straight out. It's one of the drier factions in that way.
I haven't tried too much of the new battle stuff, but it still comes down to picking your cards, hitting go and seeing what happens.
All in all, it's a natural progression for the game, and if you like it, you should probably get it, but it will be converting nobody into Endless Space fans who weren't already.
My own feelings about it are contradictory. In a way, I love its streamlined space 4x formula, and all of the parts are there, and it's still beautiful to look at, and the UI is still tops in its field, but once all the parts are put together, it still feels just a bit lifeless and dry. They've done a lot to fix that, adding plenty of random events and whatnot and what have you, but there's still no personality to it. Space battles are still "press the button and see who wins", and now that you can press all of the buttons from a dialogue box, there's no reason to actually watch the battle, which was the best part, because it looks so damn good.
Eh. It is what it is. Beautiful, streamlined, but ultimately cold. Like a dead runway model!
