Haha. This was a thing on some gaming blogs a few months ago. Some were arguing that Proteus, Dear Esther, Stanley Parable and stuff made with Twine weren't games while others called them oppressors. To summarize, games are generally about interaction and these games don't want you to interact. They want to monologue instead of dialog which is why they're so short (how long can you listen to someone rant?) In SimCity, Animal Crossing, and the Sims you can interact with the world. In Proteus you can walk around and look at graphics but you can do the same thing in FF, but with prettier art. Maybe that's the funniest part of this, Proteus, etc get some benefit from not being labeled as games because when you do that, you invite comparison so actual better games that are more entertaining. It's also rather insulting to imply that game devs haven't been trying to design games that allow for "zen like relaxation" or "strong narrative focus". Nobody argued that Journey or Planescape weren't games. I'm not sure how I feel about the term "gamelike performance art" but it's a better description of the deeply personal works that define the movement and allows a better critique of them. It also allows breathing room for the works of Rohrer, Benmergui, etc which have some value (moreso than any SJW turned game designer) even if they aren't fun. |
