What does the map mean? by Commander Tansin A. Darcos 06/15/2013, 6:06am PDT
Each map would be a 10x10 grid with 100 game squares. A blank square is not in use; there is nothing there. A square that is not blank has to be touched. When all squares on the level have been touched without backtracking, you've won the level and go on to the next one. A diamond might represent an optional square, you can touch it or not, if you can complete the level and don't need to touch it, then you still win, but if you "open" it, it becomes a regular square that you must touch.

A circle represents a "double touch" or "turn" or "rotate" square (or perhaps since it's a circle it's not a square, it's a table, and you "turn the table".) But anyway, you touch the table, then either it changes color or rotates into a regular square that you have to touch again. You can use it as a bridge square, to jump to one you can't otherwise reach or to use as a cross path.

There's also going to be an optional table, if you don't open it but you touch all the other squares that are regular squares, you win the level. Otherwise, once you open it, you now have to touch it, move to another square, then come back and touch it again to win the level. Tables (or Turn Squares) are the only ones you can backtrack onto.

One square each level has a slash across it, in the real game, blank squares won't have this. This is the "Hint" square, when the level designer creates it, they can mark a square that they started on that will actually work to be able to solve the maze. Click on the hint button and it shows you which square is marked for the hint. Presumably the level designer is honest and this actually is the (or a) square that will allow you to solve the maze if you start there. I could have put a ? on the map but I wanted something simple to program when writing an SVG representation of the map.

Now you know why I had a maze program already partially completed that I used to make what Jonsey and Pinback called "The Genesis Device", I was trying to find a program that could tell me how to solve the mazes in Dedale (which does even more complicated mazes than Cetka does), and when I couldn't find a program that would do what I wanted, I decided to write a maze-type game of my own.
