Way back in the day I was a sound tech at a university, and this guy came down to play an open mic where I was running the mixer. He busted out a boom box ("ghetto blaster") and destroyed the room with his karaoke while stripping down to custom-made gold underpants and knee-high gold boots, it was frankly unbelievable and it's an image I will carry with me to my grave. He's back again with a new album that is apparently a tribute to soul legends*; instead of a wacky exercise in eyebrow-raising performance art, he's turned in a pitch-perfect blend of ironic and not-ironic soul music.. *"Lady, you shot me" was allegedly the last thing spoken by Sam Cooke after he was shot by a hotel manager while he was chasing a prostitute down the street butt naked |
