Risks Digest reported that some students at MIT figured a way to game the system into getting an "A" in a programming class. Under the rules, the final grade for the entire semester for that class is based upon the class final; the student or students who get the highest grade in the final get an "A" and then everyone getting a lower grade are then graded with an accordingly lower grade. Now, based on this, have you thought about how to game the system?
Well, it's really simple. If every single student failed to show up, in essence, a total boycott of the final exam, everyone would get the same grade, "0". Which means the highest grade in the class is 0, since everyone got the highest grade issued, everyone has to be given an A for the class!
They didn't like it but they had to give everyone A for effort. The rules were changed specifically for all future classes that if this happens again, then everyone who doesn't complete the exam gets a 0 and that means an F in the class. Also, similar attempts to "game the system" get a 0 as well.
