To my mind things that start with natural language definitions are structured enough to not be intuitive but abstracted enough that you will never learn anything from them.
This is exactly why I resisted going this route at first. My manager and I had a lot of discussions about whether BDD frameworks were a good idea for testers and I was on the no side because my opinion is that testers should just sack up and learn to code if the company thinks it's a priority. However, while a couple of us went outside of work and trained up on our own, there's also been a couple of "learning initiatives" (book clubs on company time) where testers have gotten together to do study groups... six months in, the C# group was introducing themselves to what inheritance means. It could take a very, very long time for people to learn to automate stuff if we don't intervene somehow.
Another thing that changed my mind was that everybody - at least for the moment - just rapturously loves the business-readable test format. The biz types love seeing them at demos, and the devs love the sessions where the testers and devs knock out the tests together, and everybody likes the transparency.
As an org we support 5 different platforms, too (if you count web as a platform) so it's nice to be able to have everybody in QA communicate the nature of the automated tests in a common format. Assuming we can learn to fill in the steps in all the different languages. o_O
I have a feeling I'm going to read this post in a year and laugh at my own naivete. I'm trying to be positive! |

This doesn't match my concept of ATDD or how I'm trying to apply it by Fullofkittens 04/18/2013, 4:25pm PDT

The issue is that we don't have enough automators to go around by Fullofkittens 04/18/2013, 4:32pm PDT
