Valve's Steam online game subscription service has a voluntary reporting program where they ask users of their games for permission to scan their computers and to report anonymous statistics on hardware and software installation on their computer. The information is summarized and they report it on a monthly basis.
The current statistics for February 2013 are very interesting, after correcting some errors in the survey that misrepresented some data in previous months. I'm only listing the first 3 entries, the others are usually the trailing edge of a reverse "hockey stick" trend.
Number 1 operating system is Windows 7, 64 bit at 56% followed by Windows 7 at 14%. Windows XP 32 bit and Windows 8 64 bit at 9%, everything else below 4%.
Most common Ram is 8GB at 23%, 4GB at 22% and 3GB at 19%.
Free hard disk space, 100-249 GB at 26%, 250-499GB at 25%, and 10-99GB free at 24%.
Processor Speed has 2.3 to 2.69 ghz topping the list at 21% followed by 2.0 to 2.29 at 12% and 3.0 to 3.29 and 3.3 to 3.69 at 12% each.
The CPU processor count surprised me, 2 CPUs taking 48%, 4 CPUs taking 43%, Single CPUs taking only 5%.
Most common resolution being used is 1920x1080 at 30%, 1366 x 768 and 3840x1080 at 20% each.
The language used survey surprised me. While English clearly is #1 at 53%, number 2 is Russian with 16%, then German at 5%.
While Steam is clearly installed on 100% of the computers surveyed, virtually 100% have Adobe Flash, 73% have Acrobat and 63% have Firefox.
