Dan Aykroyd and his brother Peter are given 40 million dollars in 1991 to make a movie with Chevy Chase and John Candy.
He hands over one of the most repulsive movies ever filmed that makes just over 8 million.
Michael Cimino makes a western that costs something like $50 million, and it isn't very good, plus the film would have been like 5 hours long. Now, let me tell you something, from what I've heard, westerns are usually a pretty safe genre and even tired-plot formulaic ones can at least break even, but his movie, Heaven's Gate, is so bad it bankrupted the studio. Akroyd can't even come close to this level of fuckup.
It's sort of like what happened when Cameron made Titanic, it cost well over $200 million to make, and when you look at the ship disintegration scenes, you know where the money went. Cameron even went so far as to agree to give up his participation in the movie to be allowed to finish it. He was just damn lucky that he made a really great film that did over a billion dollars at the box office or his name wouldn't be mud in Hollywood, it would be shit, like Cimino. I noticed that after Cameron just barely squeaked by on Titanic that he laid low for a few years until he again made a box office blockbuster with Avatar. |
