I'm pretty sure that I've never met anyone who played Goldeneye and didn't swear it was the shit. As far as to what specifically made it awesome, I'd have to go with solid to superb design, aided greatly by the fact that FPS games were still largely absent on consoles. In fact, I had only played PSX Doom, Alien Trilogy and Turok before Goldeneye came along, and I didn't get around to buying a PC untill '99, so FPS games in general were still new to me. I mean, who didn't think Turok was the shit the first time they fired it up?
Goldeneye was Turok without broken level design and repetitive gameplay; it gave you that same "ZOMG!" feeling and ran with it, and it never seemed to run out of steam. I remember it being the most realistic-looking shooter at the time, and I had to have sniped about six million ruskies in the neck just to watch that writhing death animation. And the shooting was good! Not just visually, (which, all in all, was the benchmark for simulated murder, lasting until Soldier of Fortune introduced dismemberment) but in the gameplay and control schemes themselves. This was the first "rumble pak" game for me, and for all the shit heaved at the N64's admittedly wonky gamepad, the combination having a trigger for "fire" and having the controller thump from every shot is something I'd describe as "instaboner."
That Goldeneye did all this stuff right and was genuinely challenging is probably what makes it so memorable. I can't remember how many controller tosses I tallied up during that goddamned "provide cover while Natalya hax0rz" part, but I do remember flipping the bird at the TV when I finally passed the mission. THAT'S RIGHT! SUCK IT, GAME!
I'd have to agree with FSBT about the Far Cry parallel. I may have even flipped off the volcano level. |
