Couldn't believe that an SNES emulator made it into the official app store. It's a port of SNES9x.
PROS:
- works pretty much flawlessly on the games I tried. Compatibility is probably right up there with SNES9x, which I'm assuming is good since I haven't used that emulator in over 10 years
- seems to have active development and regular updates in the store
- makes up for the shitty games in the app store (almost all of them)
CONS:
- completely validates ICJ's hatred of touchscreens for gaming. Tried to play Super Mario World, which looked and sounded great, but controls were shitty to the point of being unplayable. I don't know if I should blame the emulator or multi-touch being unable to deal with pressing a crosspad button, run, and jump simultaneously. I played an XBox Live version of FF1 on this phone and it worked pretty well, so I guess my best option is to load up a bunch of RPGs and other less action-oriented games. Couldn't even imagine trying to play Street Fighter II Turbo on this.
- Shoulder buttons are just buttons on the screen. In portrait mode they're BELOW the crosspad and regular buttons. Ridiculous!
- In landscape mode the crosspad and buttons overlap the screen so that your thumbs get in the way
- Even though I can connect my phone to my PC and treat it like a USB drive and create arbitrary folders and copy arbitrary files, I guess WIndows Phone apps don't get any real access to the file system. So to get games on the phone, you have to sign up for a Sky Drive account and upload ROMs to it so the app can sync them onto your phone. You want me to upload illegal ROMs to Microsoft's cloud service? Are you TRYING to get me arrested? Although, if they're allowing the SNES emulator into the store and mods on Microsoft's Sky Drive forums are openly helping people upload ROMs, I guess they don't care.
