The reboot really was Transformers with ships instead of robots. Open with ancestor of main character being killed by villain from another world, kid grows up into loser who is called to adventure by scoring a sweet ride to impress hot chick, character from same place as villain arrives to help, military uselessly plinks away at villain until he is vaporized when the object he sought backfires on him.

The act 2 climax is whether Kirk can successfully tell a yo mama joke, at which point he takes command the instant Spock throws a punch at him, despite Kirk being stripped of his non-existent rank, after being marooned on a deadly planet instead of thrown in the brig, all so he could meet Scotty and Spock, who of course could only be introduced on a deserted planet, so they can go on to defeat the mining ship which is like saying a modern freighter can wipe out a fleet of WWI battleships, despite the fact that said ship previously wiped out an entire fleet of Federation ships in under a minute. Kirk must have an obstacle in getting on the Enterprise because CONFLICT! let's puff his face up whoah too much NONONONONONONONONONO swordfighting Sulu see? Running around to lock on transporter NONONONONONONONONONO. Beam back to Enterprise pointless wacky trapped in the tubes scene NONONONONONONONO. Cobra is loose in Paris! Don ye supersuits and get ready to cartwheel, Sulu!
