DMC4 is so weirdby Mischief Maker 01/07/2013, 7:50am PST
I recently re-installed it after seeing this video. Watching the cutscenes afresh in the context of DMC-style games to come, I'm wondering if there was some sort of civil war going on in development? Like the whole game has this theme of passing the torch from DMC3 Dante gameplay, which is all about choices and options and annihilate the enemy with your own individual style, to Bayonetta-style Nero gameplay, which is all about pressing buttons at the correct animation frame, QTEs, and canned fatalities. Clearly some of the people involved didn't like this transition because not only is Dante's combat model at the peak of the series, but for every cutscene that talks up Nero, there's usually one immediately following that says "...but you're not NEARLY as cool as Dante, wanker!" Even the ending. If Nero succeeds at the end credits challenge, his final cutscene is him staring meaningfully at his virginal beard from 20 feet away with no attempt to move closer. Does he ever even hold her hand in the game? Meanwhile Dante's secret ending cutscene is him hanging out and eating pizza while a couple of big breasted women bounce around his office arguing over how much money he should be showered with for this last job.
Also, what a departure Dante was from the typical videogame protagonist, when you really think about it. He's not a reluctant child who struggles with doubt. He's not a grizzled stoic soldier driven by DUTY! Dante LOVES his job! He's badass and having the time of his life showing off. I'd say he's one of the most relatable videogame protagonists of all time because his reactions mirror the player's. What's this? A briefcase that turns into a variety of guns?
Okay enough of this fun stuff, time for another cutscene of Nero frustrated and crying. Say hello to the future, gamerz!
