Galciv 2 has the most amazing custom ship designer ever made. You can piece it together from an absurd number of hulls and nacelles into all manner of fantastic configurations like a virtual set of legos. The main thing that decided me on buying this game was AARs where people showed off their amazing ships with little "histories" they made up around them.
The problem is, once you take these amazing ships into combat they just sorta wobble around and bump into each other until one of them explodes, because really they're just a combination of 3 attack numbers and 3 defense numbers being compared by the RNG.
But that's okay! Thanks to my GalCiv 2 experience I love Sword of the Stars that much more, because combat is rendered in full 3D! For example, humans have the fastest FTL drive in the game. The trade off to balance for that is that all human ships have an enormous ring nacelle sticking out of their engine compartment that gives them a wide target profile from just about any angle, so they're likely to soak up more punishment than, say, the snake-shaped ships of the Tarka. Balancing abstract logistical numbers with a geometric handicap, gotta love it!
