Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil by durgee maaaaan 11/05/2012, 12:40pm PST
What to say about this attempt to "Shawn of the Dead"-ify the "scary hillbillies kill teenagers in the woods" story? The real question is, how can a movie this goddamn charming have so few laughs? I can't think of a movie I've smiled through more without actually managing to let out even the smallest giggle(*).

The concept is precious -- buncha rich hot kids going to a cabin in the woods to have hot sexy times and hopefully not get killed. You even have your requisite "strange gas station" scene where you get the foreboding scene where the kids meet the two hillbillies, one of whom is sipping a can labelled "beer" and eyeballing the hottest of the coeds.

Once you get to the woods, though, hilarity and misunderstandings ensue -- turns out the hillbillies, particularly the chubby, bearded one who likes "beer" are sweeties. This type of movie needs a body count, of course, which it's able to tally up purely by way of irony, and our heros' innocence.

So it's all very clever and charming. It is a good time. I recommend it. It's just limited to that charm and cleverness, and never quite manages straight-out "funny."

(*) I lied, I laughed twice. Once as Dale tries to talk to the girl at the gas station and manages due to his own social awkwardness to terrify them and set the scene for the rest of the movie. Also as Dale attempts to correct his grammar while explaining to a girl they rescued that they're not bad guys:

"Me and Tucker... err... I and Tuck-- Tucker and I brang you up here..."
