It was really a feature of your sound drivers and isn't that simple by Fullofkittens 10/08/2012, 5:57pm PDT
At work we make recording applications and we had to design our own low-level shit to get at the system audio. Creative soundblasters and Audigys have a "What You Hear" option which is basically them doing the same thing.

For non-Soundcloud sound-recording, the easy low-tech way to do it is to run a male-to-male 1/8" stereo cable from your line-out back into your line-in. However, apparently Soundcloud is not all that serious about keeping you away from the mp3 in their player so you could also just do that.

NOTE: aside from the very grave, very mortal ethical failure that's represented by attempting to download the 101st mp3 from a free soundcloud user instead of the 100th one, more importantly I should point out that the mp3 that they use in their player is very compressed compared to the legally downloadable one (which is just a straight copy of what the artist gave them). So if you're that big a fan you might just want to PM the artist and ask for a better copy.
