Burst lasers all the way. Slightly less damaging once the shields are down in exchange for infinity times better at getting the shields down in the first place. First time I beat it was with two burst laser IIs and a Hull laser.
That doesn't make any sense. Your third burst weapon isn't helping take down the shields - the burst fire from the first two takes down the shields, then your hull laser is doing the damage. You could swap out the hull laser for a halberd and inflict way more damage.
Fire the hull laser at an empty room and you're doing damage on par with a halberd beam.
Beams are better. You can miss with a hull laser and the best you can hope for is 6 damage with no damage to systems and maybe a hull breach, but a hull breach in an empty room doesn't do much. Against an unshielded ship, you're guaranteed at least 6 damage as it's trivial to hit three rooms. If you're looking to maximize damage I bet you could hit four rooms for 8 damage and you pretty much can't help but hit a system or two. Hitting, say, engines shields and weapons for two damage apiece - very possible against some ship layouts - is much better since those systems need to be repaired before they get the bonus for being manned.
Are you not pausing the game or something? If you use the space bar and time your shots it should be pretty easy to sneak in a halberd shot while their shields are down.
The RNG with the encounters isn't bothering me so much more, but the shop items are driving me crazy. Why yes, two shops in a row offering to sell more crewmen to my fully crewed ship, with 5 out of 6 of the crew for sale are worthless slugs. Sure I'm flying an Engie ship, so why on earth would I ever want to buy drones? Keep offering me bottom of the barrel missile launchers!
If you don't get at least one good shop offering by the time enemy ships start getting 2 shields, you might as well start over.
I find you have to get pretty creative and use whatever gets offered, because holding out for a burst laser II that never comes is a recipe for failure. Right now I've got an engie A ship with the default ion gun, fire bomb, and pike beam (found the pike) and a defense I, attack I, and boarding drone. I can't do shit for direct damage but the flaming robot invasion force is hilarious and surprisingly effective so far. |
