I can't believe how many good reviews this has, describing it as an original movie.
Here's what originality does not look like: mashing up a bunch of other horror movies* and then putting the most obvious writer's-workshop spin imaginable on the result.
It's still possible to be innovative by mashing up existing ideas in a new way that creates a compelling experience for viewers but I wasn't feeling it. It's not scary and the jokes didn't land, for me. They could have done a lot better by doling out the revelations more steadily - everything is on the table from the very first moment so there's never any reason to be interested in what's going on. Without going into spoilers, I was really sad when I saw Bradley Whitford in the very first scene.
As far as wacky meta horror movies are concerned, I recommend the average-but-still-better Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, which is also not scary in the slightest but is a lot funnier. FUN TRIVIA: Both of these movie feature an actress that was once a yellow Power Ranger.
*I noticed: House on Haunted Hill, Evil Dead, Cube, 13 Ghosts, Scream |
