Burst lasers all the way. Slightly less damaging once the shields are down in exchange for infinity times better at getting the shields down in the first place. First time I beat it was with two burst laser IIs and a Hull laser. Fire the hull laser at an empty room and you're doing damage on par with a halberd beam.
The RNG with the encounters isn't bothering me so much more, but the shop items are driving me crazy. Why yes, two shops in a row offering to sell more crewmen to my fully crewed ship, with 5 out of 6 of the crew for sale are worthless slugs. Sure I'm flying an Engie ship, so why on earth would I ever want to buy drones? Keep offering me bottom of the barrel missile launchers!
If you don't get at least one good shop offering by the time enemy ships start getting 2 shields, you might as well start over.
