Unlocked some ships, beat it once by fabio 09/29/2012, 3:34pm PDT
To beat the final boss you pretty much need near max shields AND engines. A max cloak can substitute for one of those but not both. I've never had much luck with defense drones and the last boss just seems like he can overwhelm them.

Shop items are a little too random considering how much more insanely useful some items are than others. Out of 20 games I've only seen the weapon pre-igniter once.

Kestrel starting ship: Best thing about this is starting with a burst laser II, which is all around the best gun in the game. Getting 2 of them and you're pretty much set. It's what I beat the boss with. The ship achievements are ridiculous so who knows what the Type B loadout looks like.

Engi ship: Fights are too drawn out and tedious to enjoy this one. Ion guns blow. Boarding parties completely fuck you over. Type B starts you with one crew and a couple ship board drones.

Stealth cruiser: Got this one from some quest. Starts with a cloak but no shields (you can buy them for 150 in a store). Very fragile start. Type B also fairly ridiculous to unlock.

Zoltan cruiser: Unlock from the quest where you listen to Zoltan missionaries then talk to a rebel ship about peace. You start with no regular shields but one of those ablative super shields instead. You also get 3 power crewmen and start with a halberd beam that makes the early game a breeze. Type B trades out the halberd beam for a pike beam.

Osprey: Think I got it from beating the boss. You get a separate artillery beam system. It's a beam that pierces all shields with a super long cooldown (reduced the more power put into it). Basically a turtle ship as you wait for the artillery beam to wear them down.

I've tried boarding party strategies. There's beaming over mantis then hitting them with a heal beam. Sending over rockmen in the wake of a fire bomb also works. The problem with boarding parties is they're so micro management intensive and it gets tedious doing it every encounter.
