Is this a memory problem or something worse? by Tansin A. Darcos (TDARCOS) 09/02/2012, 4:28am PDT
I happened to be changing channels about 5 this morning and landed in the middle of an infomercial selling, of all things, a best 25 episode selection of the Carol Burnett Show, with the episodes selected by Carol herself. For those of you too young to know about it, Carol Burnett was a variety show that ran for 11 years on CBS back in the 1960s and 1970s. It starred the Eponymous Carol along with about 4 other people as co-stars.

This was one of the slickest infomercials I've seen in a long time, done very much like it was a documentary review of the show and less like an attempt to sell the show on DVD which was the actual purpose of the advertisement. Interviews with lots of people about Carol and how significant she was as a comedienne.

Well, the thing that got me was one of her co-stars, who I immediately recognized. Tim... Tim... WHAT THE FUCK WAS HIS GODDAM LAST NAME? I couldn't remember. I remembered other people on the show, Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman who went on to do a terrific job in Blazing Saddles as Hedy Lamarr. ("THAT'S HEDLEY!"). Tim was in the show McHale's Navy. But I could not place his last name even though I knew that I had known it.

But I couldn't remember who Tim was. And it was bugging the shit out of me. It was worrying me, I've had a few of these types of errors before where I can't remember something I used to know. And it bothered me, is it just an occasional memory loss that you have even when you're 20 years old, or is it something else.

After a while, I remembered. Tim Conway. This kind of made me feel better, I remembered it without the program telling me. A few minutes later it did mention his name.

The thing is, it's bothering me as to whether this failure is just a simple memory lapse or is it something worse, I mean, could I have that bad disease where you start to lose your memory of everything, and you eventually can't even remember people's faces and I think you end up some sort of mindless blob who can't even remember what they did ten seconds ago, like that guy in the movie Fifty First Dates? Oh, gee, what was the name of that disease I was thinking of? Now I'm really scared, next thing I might discover is I have Alzheimer's or something and I end up not being able to remember things, forget people's faces and end up a mindless blob who can't even remember what they did ten seconds ago, like that guy in the movie Fifty First Dates.

Now if I could just remember what that disease was that attacks people's memory. Again, I hope I someday remember what it was before things get worse, like I get Alzheimer's or something.
