The alchemist tree is for people who hate themselves. It maximizes the time you have to dick around in the inventory screen, one of Witcher 2's biggest weaknesses, and the only reward you get is a bunch of passive stat boosts. YAWN. There's nothing bombs knives or traps do that spells can't adequately replicate. Potions are now optional in Witcher 2 and I consider that an improvement.
The biggest learning curve hurdle for Witcher 2 is that you can't rely on swords alone, you must use spells in combat or you're dead. The ideal character build in Witcher 2 is some combination of the magic and the sword path. You can experiment with builds in the Arena. The 3 best builds I've identified are:
All builds: Max out Vigor Regen and Parrying in the basic tree.
Group Build (Normal difficulty): Max out Fortitude in the Basic Tree. Take the whirlwind branch of the sword tree, followed by the precision branch. Max out Aard (Force Push) and Quen (Magic Shield) in the Magic Tree. Use Aard for breaking blocks and Quen w/venting for group control.
Hit and Run Build (Hard difficulty): Max out Fortitude in the Basic Tree. In the Magic Tree, start with Destructive Magic, then max out Igni (Fireball) and Yrden (Magic Trap). In the Sword Tree, take the footwork branch, then the finesse branch. You'll need a critical effects mutagen to get the most out of finesse. There's a couple alchemists in flotsam who will give you one for free. Yrden is essential for fighting monsters that charge, like Endregas. It hurst them, stops them in their tracks, and sometimes they get paralyzed, so you can roll behind and get several free hits on their vulnerable rear quarters.
Swordmaster Build (Dark difficulty): Max out Arrow Redirection in the Basic Tree. Take the Riposte branch in the sword tree, followed by the sudden death branch. Max out Axii (Possession) in the magic path. Enemies need to be really aggressive for you to get the most out of Arrow Redirection, Riposte and Axii, hence the difficulty suggestion. |
