I refuse to believe anyone playtested it for more than 10 minutes. The controls are clunky as hell and you're constantly fighting against the camera because it's being taken away from you or restricted. The game also likes to interrupt you to listen to your stupid teammates forcing you walk at a snail's pace and disabling every other button. "DAN, LOOK AT THAT SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT!" "DAN, GRAB THAT WEAPON!" "DAN, LET ME BORE YOU SHITLESS WITH A BUNCH OF PERSONAL HISTORY YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT!" "DAN.......................HI! ^__________________^"
Early on in the game there's a giant robot you fight by jumping on its back and shooting it in the head, and the game confines your camera to mostly pointing downward. Meanwhile, an enemy spawned behind me and was just potshotting me in the back and I couldn't turn the camera around to shoot him and I couldn't find any DISMOUNT ROBOT button, so the solution was to just stand there and get shot until my body went limp and fell off. Great game!
They also made run, dodge, climb over, and take cover all the same button. In theory, this is supposed to allow you to sprint up to a wall and automatically take cover. And then when you want to advance, vault over a wall and already have your finger on the run button. In practice, you constantly do all the things you don't fucking want to at any given moment. I didn't want to take cover, I just wanted to run up to this wall and wait for a second. I didn't want to vault over the wall into enemy fire, I wanted to detach myself from it so I can run somewhere else. This game has the same problem that I hated about Uncharted. I can't just safely remove myself from up against a wall, I'm constantly diving and rolling out into stupid places because too many things are mapped to one button.
I'm giving up on the game on the boss fight where you have to fight a big airplane where you have to destroy 4 engines. The game gives you a rocket launcher that takes several seconds to aim and lock on. All the while flying robots are shooting you and homing missiles are targeting you. Your teammates are fucking useless, and you can't move very fast while you're aiming. So this results in like 4 missiles slamming into you and ragdolling you into a wall, causing you to drop the rocket launcher, and then slowly go through your standing-up animation. There's not enough rockets by default, so you have to shoot down other robots carrying extra missiles. So I'm running around the area and a homing missile lands near me, causing me to stop in place and brace myself which is exactly what you want to do during an explosion. Just stand still and absorb the blast. This provides just enough time for a second missile to ragdoll me across a platform. Eventually I ragdoll over to where a missile landed only to find out it landed on an unreachable platform. Awesome! After a reload, I notice a mounted machine gun and I use it to pretty easily take out the boss. Except after the boss is dead the game displays the "ZOOM CAMERA" button to show me where I need to go next, which winds up completely disabling the "LET GO OF MACHINE GUN SO I CAN RUN THERE" button. I'm completely stuck! No amount of button mashing or keyboard flipping causes me to let go. So I reload thinking maybe the game saved a checkpoint after the boss died. NOPE! I'm back to before the boss fight. Fuck this game.
note: if you bought in the steam sale and still want to try it, I recommend bumping the FOV up in the options menu from 38. I switched it to 60 and it was much better. |
