| A History Channel show about falconry and the landed gentry having falcons for hunting purposes, told how a lot of their terms entered the language in general.
When a falcon isn't hungry it will puff up its chest and won't show much interest in hunting. The bird is "fed up." You wear a glove to hold a falcon, and one of the ways to be sure it knows not to try to fly off is to grip around its talons. That way it can feel it's "under your thumb." Usually they'll have a falcon on a leash of some kind when they're not going to release it. You usually want to grip the leash tight or spin it around your index finger, so that the bird is "wrapped around your finger." |
