For me, as soon as I finish the main quest line I'm done with the game. Yet I also go through two or three iterations and do the "major" storylines in them separately. So I get about 80 hours out of it. It's best to take Skyrim in moderate doses. Play for 20 hours. Set it down for 2-3 weeks. Start it up again.
After "playing" Daggerfall, I never built a class-specific character again in TES games. I would blend enough skills from Warrior, Mage and Thief to join all three guilds and play their questlines. Skyrim doesn't have any primary/secondary skill selections, but points into respective trees for skills. That's what focuses your character. I did it all in one shot.
I spent a huge portion of the game exploring. Finding the Dwemer lost cities is always worth it. Whatever the huge underground city is called, that'd be worth $10 as DLC right there.
If you enjoy open, free-form gaming and easily get lost in games like Fallout: New Vegas, it's worth it. On that note, get F:NV GOTY if you don't have it. Same concept.
