I think I must've been suffering cognitive dissonance brought on by the combination of beautiful presentation and appealing subject matter with shallow, repetitive gameplay and a few BAFFLINGLY STUPID design choices. I wonder which came first: the decision to make an open-world game without any world persistence, or the decision to tell a story about the tragic futility of war? There was so much to like about Far Cry 2 that if it were even reasonably fun it could've been one of the best experiences of the last decade.
Oh, and despite any developers' assertions to the contrary, the film this game was most obviously inspired by - both visually and thematically - was 2003's The Rundown, starring Dwayne Johnson and Seann William Scott. It was also mediocre, but it was only 100 minutes long, which by my calculations makes it about 1/15th the waste of time Far Cry 2 was. |
