| Jonsey, I'd like to make a few comments about Caltrops and about something I am surprised about.
I make jokes about calling the people here "cretinous reprobates" but despite what I say, they are remarkably very well behaved compared to some of the stuff I've seen. I mean, you've probably seen my posting where I spoke about how someone opened the wrong gate at a catfish farm, the jellyfish - the locusts of the ocean - swam in, and swam in, and swam in, and stung the beautiful catfish to death and consumed them, and the jellyfish was solid packed to 20 feet deep in a huge tank, wall to wall. Well, this is the usual result of an open system the way Caltrops is. The spammers and the scammers come pouring in to post garbage and filth up the place with click-through links to everything from pornography to malware, to sites that don't even work, and they spew, and spew, and spew and eventually the locusts of the Internet gorge themselves on pristine websites and leave huge amounts of waste and ruin. You had this on a small scale when a bunch of people came in and camped on JC and you had to discard hundreds or thousands of phony registrations for accounts and I think a lot of garbage posts, I'm not sure. So I am curious how you keep this place so neat and tidy. I mean, I had to lock down my blog at paul-robinson.us, it uses a program which I found satisfactory called B2Evolution. I originally allowed comments, and got 3 good ones and probably 5,000 pieces of spam. At first I was using the internal system built into the blog software to expunge the spam but it was way too much, I'd have been spending 2 hours a day responding to the messages and such to expunge the spam and report them to the central command for B2Evolution to blackball them. So I simply went into the database using MySqlAdmin and bulk deleted the garbage, thousands and thousands of items. So the questions that come up are, how do you keep this place from turning into "a wretched hive of spam and villainy," as Obi Wan referred to the cantina in Star Wars (IV)? Is it that you've just never been noticed (I find a little hard to believe that), you have anti-spamming features to stop them from trying, you keep a hard watch on the place to stop spam from getting to far out of hand, or something else? |
